The report 'that there is only ' one. case of; cerebro-spinal meningitis 'in Christchurch was to-day confirmed by Dr. Cliesson, Public Health Officer, who told a •'Press"; representativenhat: there' was no cause 1 whatever for-alarm or for any suggestion that-tho' disease might senousl.y spread. This particular .case, Dr. Chesson added, was probably the result of-living in an overcrowded houso under insanitary conditions;. Every precaution had been taken to avoid infection, and tbe' man's family were now isolated in , the;' hospital as contacts ' for, 'observa- ' tiori. ;; The raaii himself was progressiiig favourably. In addition to this definite case there is another of a soldier on leave from Trentham; This man is.now isolated at the hospital as a' suspect "carrier" . of-tho disease, though not actually'suffering himself; his family are also isolated for observation as contacts. This case Dr. Cliesson-states is quit©, distinct from the one 'previously mentioned, in which spinal meningitis has actually manifested itself.
