IS GOLD H©ARDED?
A QUESTION IN THE HOUSE. Reference to the possibility of Chinese hoarding' gold was mado in the House of Representatives vesterday by Mr. W. H. Field. Sir. Field said tliat some two months ago reliable information had reached liim that Chinese wero buying gold at a premium, giving 20s. 6d. for a sovereign. This was borne out by the report in the newspapers that a sum of £600 in gold had been stolen from the shop of a Chinese shopkeeper in .Wellington. Mr. Field thought that tho hoarding of gold by Chinese, if at all generally carried on, might have a bad effect on our currency, and ho asked the Minister of Finance to make inquiries. The Hon. J. Allen said l he had already made some inquiries in tho matter. and had found that there was very little reason to suspect that Chitieso were hoarding gold. But oven if they' wero it did not matter much, because the export of gold was absolutely prohibited'.
