— 7 — The weekly meeting of thoFrenchClub was held on Thursday night," when -there was a goodl attendarce. • Mr. W. B. Hudson After an introductory piano piece played by Miss Witcocks, tjie chairman read a letter from Mr. A. Stuart Menteath; the .president of the club, in acknowledgment of 'a vote of sympathy that had been passed some weeks previously, when the news of the death of Mr. Menteath's son reached our shores from the Dardanelles. Two short lectures were given. The first was on "Modern Explosives," by Mr. R. M. Bruce, assistant to-Professor Easterfield. . Mr. Bruce's manuscript was'read by the secretary, though : Mr. Bruce was in attendance to illustrato his paper by a fow chemical experiments. Mr. Bruce also, exhibited some ' specimens of .explosives-that Can bfe'handled safely, among ■ which were guncotton,. lyddite, cordite, and riitro-tolueno. Other explosives less safe to-handle,, such as, nitro-glycerine and dynamite; were referred' to, but not exhibited. , The second lecture was by Mr. Grant-, his subject being "Man." The -lecturer traced the progress of mankind from savagery tp the present civilised slate, and referred in this connection to Egyptian records, ne well as to those,of Greece and Rome. He" expressed the' opinion that in spite of civilisation many -men were 'not more advanced morally than animals, citing the treatment of women and children in support- of this contention. A hearty vote of tlmnks was j passed to the two lecturers.
