GREAT CHARGE BY ITALIAN GRENADIERS

During the attack on the - Corso Heights a regiment of Grenadiers, the tallest men in the army, -under Major Monfredi, approached to within fifty yards of the enemy's trenches and then charged with. fixed bayonets, crying, "Savvia." The Austrians broke and fled. Shrapnel forced the Grenadiers to take shelter, and the enemy readvanced, attempting to retake the trenches. Major Monfredi, who is of great sta-. ;ture, seized,a flag, and shouted: "Grenadiers, remember, the Sardinian Brigade has never retreated 1" Tho Grenadiers flung themselves wildly at the. Austrians, exterminating them. ' A shell carried off Major Monfredi's leg, and ho died.
