NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Bt Giencoi.T The Gisborne Racing Club's Winter Meeting, set down for Thursday and_ Saturday. is the only attraction for North Island sportsmen this week. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps at Trentliam and entries for the Trial Plate close ou Monday next at 0 p.m. Entries for the Pahiatua Racing Club's Annual Meeting to be held on July 28 must be made by Friday, July 9. Tho Woodlands Hunt Club Meeting takes place the day after the Pahiatua Club. Entries for this meeting also close on July 9. J. W. Lowe returned from the south on Saturday morning. He brought no horses with him, so it may be taken for granted that the sale of Golden Knight has fallen through. The two-year-old colt Patroclus. by Achilles—Success, who failed to change hands when submitted to auction at tlio Easter sales in Sydney, and was brought back to the • Dominion, has again joined F. Holmes's team at .Kiccarton. Plymouth, whose name figures in the nominations for the Grand. National Hurdles and the Sydenham Hurdles at the C.J.C. Winter Meeting, is an Aus-tralian-bred five-year-old geiding by Grafton— Miss Marionette. While riding Harlequin in slow work on the tan at Kiccarton on Wednesday, E. Ludlow was kicked below the knee by San Sebastian, with whom the .Treadmill colt was working. Fortunately Ludlow was wearing leather gaiters, and escaped with nothing more serious than a bad bruise. During an interval in the races at Napier on Friday, several two-year-olds spurted. The filly by King's Guest—Kilworth, a colt by Elysian—Lady Hester, a filly by Formation—Lady Mildred, and a filly by King's Guest—Pearlshot went together, the two first-named showing most pace. The full-sister to Bobrilioft' and the full-brother to Desert Gold strode over a furlong, both moving nicely.

No fewer than forty-one imported horses have been entered for the Melbourne Cup. Kilrain was shipped south last evening, and if he starts in the Winter Cup it will bo ill the colours of his breeder, iMr. B. Christie, of Oamaru. The latter sold Kilrain as a yearling for 50 guineas. Complaint has been made at various times that horses are not ridden in front of the stand prior to' the Tace. No doubt in niost eases when horses are taken straight to the-post such is by permission of the stewards, but in others there has been no such permission asked for or given. The matter will probably be placed on a footing shortly. that will not admit of any further infractions if penalties are to be avoided, as the following is amongst the motions to be proposed at the forthcoming Racing Conference by the president:—"Every horse must be ridden in front of the stand, as directed by the stewards, before going to the post. Should the stewards be satisfied that, after reasonable endeavour, a jockey is unable to so ride his horse they may exempt him from doing so," As the result of the bad fall received when trying to get off at the first fence in the jSapier Park Steeples, Leapuki had to be destroyed. He was only purchased T>y Mr. E. Griffin on the evening of the first day's races. Mr. H. J. Cameron, with ,£4OO, was at the head of the list of winnii/g owners at the Napier Meeting. The Otaki owner, Mr. W. H. Bowden, came next with .£293.
