V OTAKI WINTER MEETING j CUP WON BY MULTIPLY. ; Beautiful weather prevailed for the 1 opening of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's .Winter Meeting, and a large number of .visitors from Wellington made the trip . .< the lino. The track was slightly fooldiy but the racing all round was good, •f: io totaiisator investments for the day 'ire <£19,480, as against *£21,286 on the 'rresponding day of the last Winter meeting. Deviation and Pearlform wore backed in that order for the Maiden Race. The field contained a lot of half-ready horses, ; and several of them did not have an investment recorded on the machine. Goldbearing took charge at the start, I>ut she hung bhdly and Deviation and Rockabyo got up on the inside of him, as did several otuers. In the straight Pearlform came from behind, but he had no chanco of reaching Deviation, who won comfortably. Goldbeariug finished wide out, and Manu was ahead of the others. The Perry nas left at the post and took no part in the race. i Fortify was a bit unlucky not to win ; the Flying Hack Handicap. He did not find his feet too quickly and whipped tho field down the back, but at the finish he was going better than anything else in • the race. Jean Laddo led down the back . and racing round the bend she had a good three-lengths' advantage from Husimbye, but the latter finished the better, and won by a length. Fortify was two lengths away third, and Elopement was next. Soporific, The Rover, Pelican, and Sil- : .Tor Dale wcro withdrawn from the Steeplechase. Bonny, a good fencer, was tho better preferred on tho machine, but ; the jumped too Jiig"h- and Stockade, who ' had the advantage on the flat, won easily ' from the favourite. Paremata was a poor ■ third, and Fashion Plate, who is not ready, was next. Pikiho ran off, and • Katua fell at the back of the course. The Cup was a very pretty race throughout, the wholo fieid being bunch- ! ed. The Porirua. pair, George and Goldstream, were first and second favourites. < At the jump away the pair got off well, and passing the stand Goldstream, Peroueal, and Ineuru were in a line, with ( ■fultiply and George next, and Lady. ] ouisa whipping the field. At the half- ' ile tho last-named was getting up on , e-fence, and' round the bend Goldstream .d George and Multiply. Entering the ( Lady Louisa took charge on the ' ufcside, viiid quickly beat Goldstream. ( In the run home Multiply wore down the ( leader, and after a good struggle won by t a length from Lady Louisa, with lma- j rose, Goldstream, Rene, and George in that order. Haumakaka, who had Deeley in tho <, Eaddle, was better preferred than 'i'angi- i hou and Arlington in the mile Hack Han- * dicap. Eongora and Arlington led down ( the back, but the latter was hanging bad- ' ly, and was nearly off the course at tho \ home turn. Here Tangihou came fast from the .rear, and going on he won very £ comfortably. The favourite just beat 1 'Master Moutoa for 6econd place. Eongora was fourth, and Hap Dha and Merry Gain next. i The Australian-bred Veronal was favourite in the Rahui Handicap, and, jumping out cleanly, she led the whole way. ] .Wild Lupin got second money from Alt.car, who was prominent the whole way. j Adroit, after jumping out well, failed to hold her position, and finished last. Zeus and Master Achilles finished next to the | placed horses. The winner 'has been in a j place several times lately, but this is her t first win in open company. ; A well-fancied candidate in His Emin- ( ence scored in the Hack Welter Handl- j :ap in which several of the runners came ( in for strong support. The early rnnnlng t was made by Royal Marv, Lady Daylesford, and Submersion. The first-named led into the straight, but liuatangata then ! appeared on the scene, but in"the run , home the Seaton Delaval gelding could T not withstand a strong challenge by His i Eminence, who came fast on the out- j| fide. Doon, who was always well up, izn- . ished third. 0 Following are the results:— V MAIDEN FLAT .RACE, of 75 sots; weight for age. Six furlongs. 1 ifr. IV. Bidwiil's b. g.
