COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS' EFFORTS.

A TIME OF DEAL SACRIFICE. True to their pledge, the commercial travellers of Wellington supplied an interesting turn at His Majesty's Theatro last evening. Mr. F. W. Manton, on behalf of the association, said that his act would not be a comic, but a very serious one. His business was in connection with tho Wellington Patriotic Society's Carnival, who wore endeavouring to augment the fund for tho relief of wounded soldiers. Towards this fund the commercial travellers had given a motor-car, and the one who could guess the nearest to the number of votes polled by all the Carnival Queens would got tho car. He wished to explain that the car had been bought and paid for by tho travellers, and not ono half-crown was being taken from the ticket-money towards its cost. As commercial travellers and business men thev realised the serious position in which llm Empire stands to-day. The suns of New Zealand had often been called the lion cubs, and they all were proud of the stand our boys were making at the battles at the front—(applause)—and it was up to everyone to sen that thcr ars well treated when they ,I'oLum wounded. It wat intended that

the fund should be a Wellington fund, and they know that the travellers in the other three centres and the West Coast would back up their efforts. They nil know that tile allowances ami pensions of the inon were inadequate to keep a wife and family, and it was up to them to do something to keep things going. Donations had been nindo in tho pnstj but a more serious position had arisen, and it was up to everybody to make sonio re;il sacrifice. (Applause.)

"Think of the work those boys aro doing in Turkey," said Mr. Manton. "The boys who jumped over the side of the steamer, up to their necks in water—but they couldn't stop them, and they haven't stopped them yet. (Loud applause.) Then you must ask yourselves whether you have made good, and can you enthusiastically say: "Thank God, I'm a New Zenlander' ?"

Mr. Manton thon announced that Mr. Fullor had kindly allowed them the privilege of selling tickets in tho theatre for the car competition, and he thanked him for that courtesy. The car—a neat little Autocrat runaboutwas exhibited on the stage, and its neat appearanco was a lover for tho salo of many tickets. It is understood that over £300 worth of tiokots have already been sold. MAYOR'S SUBSCRIPTION LIST.
