SUPREME COURT
A CASE FOR THE PRISONS BOARD. Tho last case for trial on tho criminal list was disposed of in tho Supremo Court yesterday afternoon, His Honour the Chief Justico (Sir Robert* Stout) presiding. Mr. V. 11. Meredith, of tlio Crown Law Office, represented tho Crown. William Jones, alias Beatty, anas O'Halloran, etc., a native of Wales, 42 years, was found guilty after a lengthy trial, of indecently assaulting a hoy in Wellington 'in December last. lii returning the verdict the jury expressed appreciation of the patience exhibited by His Honour in granting tho prisoner every facility to obtain the witnesses and the information necessary in the conduct of his defence. • _
There were numerous previous convictions against the prisoner, who had been in a mental hospital on several occasions and His Honour said it was obvious from the doctor's report that he was not normal. The best thing to do would be to place him under the care of the Prisons Board, who could deal with his case. A sentence of five years' reformative treatment was passed.
