Mr. J, Vigor Brown, M.P., the Mayor, has given notice to move a 6 fol-' lows at tho next meeting of the City, Council"Whether through the continued increased cost of living at least 20 per cent, brought about by the war, the Question of increasing the' wages of those-of our employees who are receiving £200 per annum or less be raised by 10 per cent, be' considered by this council, this increase to continue till the war is over. The present Government having failed' to attempt to do • anything to assist in reducing the cost of living, it is now time that 6ome practical action was taken by public bodies in fairness their employees'." Dir. Brown has also given' notice to move in' a similar direction at the Harbour Board and High School Board of Governors.
A. large meeting of supporters of Mr. J- T, Blake's candidature for the Mayoralty of Hastings has been held, and h'aii adopted the Belgian colours. Since the Ponsonby Drum and Fife Band visited Napier a similar organisation has been formed here. There are seventy membprs on the roll, and Mr. M. Lovell, secretary of the Napier City Band, is instructing 'them,- pending the appointment of a bandmaster. The Porangahau Sports Club has donated £11 4s. to the Belgiau Relief | Fund.
