It is estimated,. says a Canadian agri:teu/iural authority, that it costs from '£20 -to .£25, "counting in risk and every-thing,-to-raise a"'draught colt up'to two • years of age. After tliat time 'he can : be broken to harness and will pay for ; himself until he reaches the market 1 age. At present horses are so scarce f that, four-year-olds and even thrce-year-;olds,' if "up 'to size, will sell from- £80 '| to £100 per pair,'and if of extra .gualj* ity considerably higher. Tliis is certainly a splendid return, and shows, that' (horse-racing oan, even under ordinary j conditions, be made just as profitable ja? any other line of farm business, i Alluding to the question-of transport tts an important"factor in sanitary arrangements,. Sir. Frederick Treves has stated thht right up at the very Front there were a motor laboratory,. motor ikitchens, i and motor ambulances of all Ikinds. What did it mean ? Everything Sin war was transport. It was transport -\itha-t killed the men.- The problem of £ transport - was within an ace of being, isclVed,..but. apparently we should nover |be able to dispense with the old horse '"ambulance at the actual firing-line. .There were many things a,motor could not do.. It could get into a ditch, but it could not get out of one; a horse ambulance could. Another curious thins was that at present no motor could 'travel a whole day with' a column. That (was to sa.v, it could not travel at three miles an hour for twelve hours, owing to gearing. . That .was, curiously enough, the problem they were now faced with, and he thought they would never be . able to dispense altogether with the horse ambulance.

The lack of rain during the last seven months lias resulted in, a heavy loss to the Auckland province. It is estimated by Mr. H. E. Pacey ,of the New Zealand Dairy Association, that the supplies received by the association are from 20.t0 25 -per cent, less than they .would have been in a normal "season. 'Tli© actual'amount paid'out to suppliers in February showed an increase :of £982 Ps. Id.,.but had the season [been favourable the new suppliers, and 'the larger, herds, would liavo been responsible for a far greater output of ,(butter. Mr. Pacey- said he considered |tho recent rain would prevent the sea'.ison from being a failure. "The ''drought," ho added, "has been the 'longest we have known, and the: out--look Ims been very serious in consequence." i 1 : T To do a tbing properly is our aim and "•ambition. To give everyone with whom ,we deal an honest deal, so that we can reckon on the continuance of his business, is our daily practice. That we require more and more separator cream to fill our orders is our present greatest trouble.' If you have .cream for sale, write us for our prices and particulars. iWanganui Fresh Food and Ice Co.—Advt. There's not a more efficient' helper to the man on the land than the Richmond Oil Engine.
