ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) : -! ■: DROWNED AT TITAHI BAY. A verdict ol accidentally drowned was returned by the Coroner (Mr. W. 6. Riddell, S.M.) at the inquiry held yesterday into the death of Mr. James Macgregor, who was drowned at Titahi Bay on Thursday. ' From the evidence, it appeared that a party went from Porirua for a swim,. and, as the beach t has the reputation of being exceedingly safe, they went a good way out. Deceased, who, it is stated, could not swim, remained some distance from the others, who were startled by a loud cry for help. On looking round they found that Macgregor had _ disappeared. Apparently no had either got suddenly out of his depth or had been seized with cramp. Twenty, minutes later his body - was, washed ashore. Life was then extinct. Macgregor was twenty-seven years of age, I and a single man. He had been employed at Porirua for some time. He was accompanied to the beach by . his younger brother. • > KILLED BY A PALL OF EARTH. ' " Auckland, February 19. 'A'. J. Malone, a married man, who6e family reside at Grey Lynn, was killed on the railway work near Pukekohe at noon to-day by a fall of earth. A LABOURER'S SUICIDE. Osborne, February. 19. 'At an inquest regarding the death of Thomas Wallace, a labourer, who committed suicido at Kaiti by cuttiug his throat, the evidence showed some gruesomo details,_ and that the man, having slashed his throat first with a pocket knife wandered • i through the house. He left on the bed occupied by two small children his money, watch, and vest. The parents of the children, hearing a noise and banging on the wall had vacated the premises and gone for the assistance of neighbours. The inquest was adjourned. Later. After an exhaustive! inquiry, an ooen verdict was returned that deceased died from a' wound in his throat, but whether it was self-inflicted or not he was unable to say.
