1 .—- "The battle' near the Vistula saw many brave events. A Cossack company,' under Khorunji Martynoff, was entrapped, and forced into a farm house, whioh was besieged all day. Seeing that escape for all the Cossacks was impossible, Martynoff resolved to save as many as he could. "Taking twelve volunteers, he made a dash at the Germans, and ordered the other Cossacks, at the same time, to (ire their carbines without ceasing. Tile Germans, concluding that the wliolo Cossack force was trying to break out with Martynoff's band, concentrated on that side of the farm house, and killed the leader and his little bind of heroes. "While this tragedy was occurring, sixty or more Cossacks _ oseaped from the other side, and rejoined their victorious comrades at Vai'ka. Thus did Martynoff lay down his life for his comrades. _________
