Acceptances for the minor events on f.lie first day of the Canterbury Jockey Glub's Winter Meeting, and final payments for the Grand National Steeplechase, Hurdles, mid Winter Cup close on' Friday next. Probably none of them will sport silk until the Australian Jockey Glub's Spring Meeting in October. Miniva, who is trained by T. A. Williams, formerly of Ellerslie,'won the Welter Milo at the Canterbury Park Meeting.on July 25. Williams is likely to visit Auckland next month with a team of horses, and Miniva and Claude Mimer will be' in the team. Honorine, a full-sister to Anna Oarlovna. started favourite in a big field for the Maiden Plato at Moonee Valley on July 25. The favourite scored, but it was only by,.the narrow margin of half a bead. At the same meeting Di Gama was made favourite in the Welter Handicap, of six furlongs, but the Vasco gelding was never in the fig'hting fine, and the nearest he could get at the finish was sixth.' This time the favourite got a good run, and was in the van until well in a line for home. In the hurdle race at Moonee Valley last month Porch, fell and his ridor, F. Burn, sustained a broken jaw bone. Burn is 'just about te retire from the saddle. News' lfrom\ Melbourne istates that J. N. M'Gregor is making a good recovery from his broken leg, Mt the other New Zealander, W. Gray, is still an inmate of St. Vincent's Hospital, where he has been lying unconscious for five weeks. The Now Zealand-bred mare Miss Soult (Soult —Lustrous), winner of several 14.2 races in Sydney, is now in India, where she-has been renamed Alice, and figures in the ownership of the Kour, Saheb' of Patiala. She is the possessor of a 14.1 life certificate. The death is announced from England of Major Eustace Loder, the well-known bleeder and racehorse-owner. Major LcdeT, who owned, amongst other K famous horses, Pretty Polly and Spearmint, -won almost, every important race, including the Derby, Oaks, and St. Leger. The deceased gentleman was a steward of the English Jockey Club, the Turf Club, and of the National Hunt Club in Ireland. When Peter the Hermit won tho Hardwicke "Stakes at. Ascot (England) last'month, ho led throughout, and cut out the mile and a'half in 2min. 29 2-ssoc, which is said to be an extraordinary gallop for the course mentioned. Kodak, the first winner trained in England by F. Wootton, is owned by his father. When Kodak won the Highweight Handicap at' Brighton last month he started favourite.
