THE TURF

RICCARTON TRACK WORK

(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.'. Christchurch, August 3. There was-little of interest accomplished at Riccarton this morning. Moreeambo, with a sweater on, ran half a. mile in 52 3-ssec, and Merry Lass gave a good display of a round over the hurdles with Parable. ,-<

. Chatnios was given a schooling task over -three hurdles, and Banian aud I'orest Belle did a round at half-pace, and then spurted three furlongs in '39 4-ssec.

Peary did two rounds at half-pace, and Gnome sprinted down the straight. Tolstoi" galloped ;half a mile, while ,I'roon did three-quarter pace work. The "Looker-on writes in the "News": —Warstep looks bright; arid well. On a couplo of occasions last week she showed that she has lost none'of her brilliancy during her long spell. Peg has joined the active brigade. Her foot which burst and lamed her some time ago has gono down, and she shows quite sound on'it now;

Admiral Soult is to be given a spin over the hurdles during the weok. 'He has not quite recovered from the kick. Ngatiruanui gave him at Trenthara. .Player is looking as well as anything engaged in the National Hurdles, aud his people are very confident that ho will ran a great Taco. The Spaniard was given strong work, and was trotted afterwards. He showed no sig/hs of bleeding, and will be given a gallop over the big fences during the week.'

Captain Jack did strong work, and was j blowing hard after it. Mummer got through three-quarter pace work in wild style, and seems to be ! greatly benefited by the gallop he had ' on Saturday. He is still on the big side. ' After the two sorry schooling displays ' Chatmos gave, it was a great surprise this ' morning to see him fly_ four hurdles in good style with his trainer up. Chortle was worked at a strong pace, and was not quite as lame as usual when ho pulled up. E. Scoullar is Tiding Sea King in all his work. The old sprinter is going freely, but appears to be a bit on the big side. Troon and Glenrby did half-pac& work in a very attractive manner. Both these houses must fun well at the meeting. Avon, is looking dry in the coat, and does not appear to be as well as when . he arrived. Medallist, with a very light weight up, hit out in good style, and pulled up quite sound. Multiply, who is solidly fancied for tho Winter Cup, appeared to be a trifle sore in front When he,trotted on to the course. He was given easy, pacing. Some people say Kilmeny is sore. I had a good look at him to-day, and could not see; any signs of it. He always has had a cramped style of moving in front. In his class Royal Medal is going as well as anything on the tracks. Ho is a, very fine jumper, and should run well in some" of tho minor steeplechases. Ilercola looks a better horse than when ho arrived from Trenthara. He was given. ■ strong half-paco work, and did it as well as one could wish. He is gaming a lot of friends for the big steeplechase, aKhmust be very hard to beat. Stroller does not appear to bo doing well. Ho was light when he arrived, and looks iighter now.
