NEW POLICE STATION.
TENDERS BEING CALLED.
Some months ago the' Government ay. cjuired from Messrs. J?ullar'and Sons the balance of their lease of the old Theatre Royal block, and following, upon' that action the old playhouse was razed to' the ground. The Minister of Justice (the Hon. A. L. Herdpian) t&en ' stated that it was the intention of ; the Government to erect a.nnw Police Station on tfie site, and keep the present Police Station site for the expansion 'of. the Law Courts. Tender! are now being, called for the erection of the new station, which\ promises'to be-a hsmdsoine addition to the architecture of the City. The building will bs four, stories higli> having handsome ■ frootages on t eacli street. Generally the struoture ■ will be pf brink and.concrete.., The.lower third of eachifacado- will.be finished.in stucco; nnd the-upper half will be ornamented with pilasters. Public entrances will be jnade in. each street,' and a motor entrance will be put in,the centre of ■ the Taylor Street,. frontage. CKicre will be'-'two. wings, x one ' facing each street; and connecting there α-rparrow block, the greater part of whicli will consist of oeiUs, ■ : The -rest qf between the wings will bo used as an exercise, yard, N •)■ In the basemept-there will be a inotor garage, and various .-stores,'' a Tpom fpr unclaimed goods, , find a police nrussum. On the ground floor, the wings, aro to'bo'u«d for the offices qf the : police, and detective force, from the Superintend dent downwards. The guard-Toom is on the 1 Waving -Taylor Street sidp, Of to forty-five- calls, fourteen are. on the ground floor—nine-for men and six lor women, including one padded cell , for each.sex.' ■ ■ ' . The first floor contains a nuraper of bedrooms, a library; .and reading room, and a billiard room with'two tables. Hero aflso is the finger-print department; ami the Commissioner of Police has his office on the same level. Ten ells for men and five for women are. on the 'first floor, one cell being tvidded. . The , , second .and ' third.; floors consist mostly of the , men's livip? quarters.; On tlie second, there are the big kitehen and dininc rooni, and forty-one cubicles, wim oorrespondins lavatory accommodation. The cell section does not run above tlie second floor; on which thwe ore sixteen cells, ten for roon and six for women, including a padded cell for each-sex. Over the billiard room, which is Wilt out into the yard from one of the wings, there is a gymnasium, The' third floor contains seventeen oubicles in the Warini; Taylor Street wing, and tMrty-foiir in tlie other; nnd a .big -Dliotogrfiphic room is' provided;. The whole of the building will be heated by a liot-w»ter rnd'ator svsfam. It is expected that the present LamMon Police Station, when it ie superseded, will be iispd to accommod»te a portion pf tho staff of the Jnstice Department.
