"MAKE THEM DRILL!"
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. (By Telezrapn.—PreßS Association.! Auckland, April 22. Tho circular, from tho Minister of Defence re finding work on roads for conscientious objectors to military training was discussed this morning by the iWaitemata County Council. Councillor W. M'Caathie remarked: ''Send them to gaol!" The chairman: We do not want th§m on the roads. They had better be mado to clean up camps. Councillor J. M'Leod: We should ask the Minister to compel' them to drill for tho defence of their homes tho same as others. Why should one man's sons have to drill and another's be' let off on a plea of conscientious ' scruples ? What is fair for one man is fair for another. I have no timo for conscientious' objectors to military training for the defence.of their homes.. Councillor J. O'Neil: They'-should be Eut in barracks in a central part of the lominion and made to drill. Councillor V. Kerr Taylor: Perhaps if they had to work on the roads they might lose their conscientious scruples. Tho chairman: Such, men would be no good 011. roads. The clerk pointed out that the Act made provision for. tho exemption of those with conscientious scruples. Councillor M'Leod.: _ It. is only a shuffle to get out of drilling.. Finally it was resolved that the council . was of opinion that these men should bo made to drill the same .ai< ithers.
