NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[BT GIENCOE.I TO-DAY'S RACING AT TRENTHAH. \ Tho Autuinn Meeting of tho Wellington ltacing Club, which commences today, promises to be a highly successful one. Tbo going will not be fast, but it should certainly bo good, and perfectly safe. Tho lawns and enclosures present a beautiful appearance, aud thero is an abundanco of bloom to be seen. The. usual train arrangements aro advertised. Specials will depart from To Aro at 10.23 a.nn and 10.43 a.m., arid from Lambton at 10.18 a.m., 10.40 a.m., 11 a.m.,.11.9 a.m., and 12.6 p.m. ■ The racing should be, full of interest, and tho results are in most cases vory difficult, to anticipate. For the big mile some soventccn horses aro expected to lino up. Soveral of tho riuvnore will bo evenly backed, but if R. J. Mason sends both Emporador and Valhalla out tho bracket should start favourite, Tho latter, who is to bo ridden by C. Emerson, is a big boom, and lie certainly' looks capable of doing anything, ,bufc, so far. ho has not been opposed to anything liko tho class ho will meet to-day.- Ho is a good boginnor, and this ehould help him to-day. Expect is. burdened with a big weight, and this will tell over tho last furlong, especially as the going will not bo fast. Merrio Roe has been withdrawn in favour of Bloriofc,. and many will take-' , this liint. Thrax is not much fancied, but tho connections of Red Book are very sanguino about tho chestnut horse, who, however, would seem to bo handicapped up to his best public form. Ladoga has heap 3 of admirers, and some of tho moro optimistic point out that R. Berry, who is to rido him today, has an unbeaten certificate, on tho Sir Ladcio gelding. His private and public form make him out to bavo a bis chanco of success. Gipsy 80110 is well handicapped, and can bo relied upon to run a good raco. Of the remainder, Irrimor is the best fancied. The Martian filly, gets a milo well, and aided by her light weight sh6 should bp in tho fighting line at tho finish. Beldame- is a grcai begiimer, and can he looked for in front' for tho greater part of tho iournoy, but tho lone straight may find nor out at tho finish. Tho Railway Handicap, result is equally difficult to anticipate. Wore.

Ermenparda to run up to her private form sho would win. but latoly she has shown a tendency to sliirk her work in races. Crown Pearl is tho latest favourite, but tho dead Roing will not be in his favour.. Bortrada has hecn most consistent of lato, and should bo a valuable second string for tho Highdcu stable. Pavlova may bo the absohto favourite, as lior track work has been of a high order. Altcar, Silver Shield, nnd Mount Victoria may run well. On public form there- is only ono liorso to look at in the St. Legcr, and that is Cherubini, hut a. slow-run race — and it is difficult to seo how it is going to bo otherwise—will not shit him, and niany look to Merry Roo to defeat fiie favourite. ■ Tho 'two-year-olds failed so badly in tho Challenge, Stakes at Riccarton that it points to them again suffering defeat at tho hands of the older division in tho same raco to-day. Emporador will have to carry Ost. 111b., and may run in tho Thompson Handicap instead. In tho absenco of Autuninus tho public may prefer Rinaldo, who ran two splendid races at Biccarton. For tho minor ovonts tho National Hurdles winner, Waterworks, may be tho elect of backers in tho Hack and Hunters! Steeplechase, but anything may happen in a jumping race and good leapers like Stroller, Kxotic, and Renowned will, all have their supporters. Grit Lawless, tho sensational dividend payer of last season, refused to jump yostorday. . . Bee and Cbakwana are the most likely of tho Nursery Handicap fiold. . Belasco, Chillies, and John Willie have all shown winning form recently and must be considered in connection with tho Silverstreain Hack Handicap.. Listen, Sir Saracen and Suomersion are recent winners in tno Wairarapa and should be the best supported in the Tinakori Handicap. Leading horsemen will be mounted today as follows: — B. Deeley—Chakwana, Byron, Ringform, Chillies, Sauci, and Submersion. A. Oliver—Expect, Arlington, and Br•mengarde. C. Emerson—;Bec, Valhalla, Belasco, Pavlova, and Sir Saracen. W. Boll—Lα Favourita' or Elevonia, Fair Rosamond, Piriform, Bertrada, and Rene; . - J. O'Sliea—Crown Pearl and Royal Arms. W. Young—Cherubini and Emperador. J. Buchanan —Bleriot and Merry Roo.
