TRAFFIC LICENSES.
OVER 1000 GRANTED. At tho City Council moeting last nielli the By-laws Committee presented a report rcoeived from tho Chief Inspector Mr. J. Doyle) on the question of un> licensed cabs, plying for liiro in the city after dark, referred to bv Councillor Fletcher at last meeting of tho council. Tho report was as follows:- With rofercnco to Councillor Fletchers i statement that there wore quite a number of unlicensed oabs plying for, hire. m tlio city after dark, I luivn to say that tho licenses were duo on April 1. nnd ono month's graco was allowed by advertisement. There are more than 1000 traluo licenses to collect annually (the number last year was 1073), and if I can get those licenses in during tho first three months of the financial year, it is as much as I can do without neglcctilie other equally important duties. Between SOO and 850 have been taken out, and proceedings aro being taken against several defaulters. I know of three cabs plying for hire without liccnsos, and attach letters from ,two of the owners, whoso request for time has l*cn complied with. In the caso of the third prooecdmgs are brins taken. I suspect onother man for using two unlicensed cabs and employing unlicensed drivers. This man will-bo dealt with as soon as I can get the ncccssnvv ovidenoe." . Councillors Hindmarsh asked was there any necessity to license all carls, such ns coal earls, etc.? „ , , Tho Mayor replied that all carts had to be examined.
