WORKING CARGO.
NEW REGULATIONS FOR SHIPS,
Tho following new regulations for tho protection of life while cargo is. being worked 011 ships veto published in tho Gozetto last night :-(a) There shall bo n foro and aft space of at least lilt, between the foro or after end of hatchcombings flmd tho nearest cross-beam or betwoen cross-beams, and, where necessary, sufficient hatch beams shnil bo unshipped and moved clear of hatchways fc} give such space—provided that in vessels whose hatches oro less than lift, foro and aft measurement all cross-beams and fore and afters in tho hatches shall bo unshipped and moved clear of the hatchways. All hatch-bcams which are not unshipped must bo properly secured to prevent their beoommg unshipped should a sling of cargo oatch underneath thorn. Provided further that- hatchbeams need not be unshipped when coal is being shipped into tno . hatches 111 bulk, (b) Tho deck approaches to hatchladders shall bo kept clear of all o|> fltructiori S . <c) All pipes which are laid abovo tho surface of tho deck shall be properly covered up so as not to bo an obstruction or impediment to mon working on deck, (d) Tho strops of all baskots used in working cargo shall bo thoroughly examined at least once a month, and restropped when necessary, and an ontrv of such examination shall bo mado in tho official log in tho case of vessels on which such log is kept. (0) All cargo derricks and their gear 6hall bo kept in proper order.
