HOTEL EMPLOYEES.
THE CONFERENCE ENDS. The Hotel Employees' Federation's Conference was concluded on Wednesday in the Trades Fall. The first business was consideration of the Wellington remit with reforenco to tiiie extension of the organisation into tho districts where at present there is no award. 'Die remit particularly asked for suggestions as to -organisation in Taraliaki, Nelson, Invercargill, and the West Coast. Jn view of the fact that in several centres the awards are expiring shortly, aiiul because of the promised Hill this session, it was decided to leave tho ■matter to the incoming executive to arrange, aftEir tho disposal of the Bill in the House, and after tho renewal of present awards. Mr. Yowl? (Rotorual moved to the effect that an Australasian Hotel and Restaurant Worker.-;' Federation be inaugurated. The motion mis carried, and the •executive were instructed to enter into negotiations for establishing such a. federation. Remit* dealing with registry offices were considered, from several centres. The conference affirmed the principle ot abolition of nrivate registry offices, in favour of a system of State and municipal control, aiul'iji the meantime decided to sfato a ease for the unions, when the time came for the amendment of the Act, as suggested by tho Prime Minister to the deputation which waited .upon him. As at previous conferences, the question of quarters.for hotel stall's was introduced, by way of & remit irom Auckland. It Vn« decided to write to the Minister for Public Health asking for a more strict examination of the quarters allotted to worker- it was also decided to generally move in'tlie direction of the gradual abolition of the livinjr-iu system. Mr Conchie (Wanganui) moved that tile Government b? nrsred to rectify detects 111 tho Barmaids' Registration Act. . I lie motion was carried, aiud the executive-in-structed to write to the- Minister for Labour again urging amending legislation. Tho Auckland Union was unanimously elected as executive union for the -next y< Th'o conference closed aflor votes of thanks to the oiiicials had been passed.
