BOXING.

• LAST.ACT IN THE CARNIVAL. To-night will complete the Carnival as far as tho Carnival Conuuitteo is concerned, the only remainitih attraction being tlio boxing, tournament, which is being held to-morrow evening, the proceeds of which the local Boxing Association are devoting to tho Citizens I'uin. Judging from tho bouts sot down, Iho evening should be well up to'tho standard of any similar tournament promoted by tho association during tho P/ 1 ®?- se , us "? 1 ;.. At the present time there is littlo doubt that Ellis and Thompson, besides being evenly matched, are the .two* leading feather-weights of tho Dominion. Both are exponents of tliu forceful as well as clever order. On a previous occasion when the two mot Ellis proved tho winner after a contest which pleased everyone. That was Thompson's iirst appearance in the professional ranks, and smco then ho has added considerably,to his experience, and as ovidence of his improvement he recently defeated Robinson, of bisijorne, who ran Ellis very closo at Iho feather-weight tournament in October last. The University events are between representatives well up to championship standard, and interest is being shown by the partisans of the different Universities. The last train to Hutt and Petone will ,bo . delayed to suit the convenience of [ suburban patroui.

The first Rugby gaine of tjie season was played ut Athletic Park on' Saturday morning, when the Wellington 'Ilub defeated'the Christchurch Club by 15 points to B.', Although ■ there was not a great number of onlookers, the "barracking" seemed to denote an enthusiastic interest in this annual game between the two clubs bearing the name of their tive •'•• ■ As', senior, grade football the play was not -good; both teams were badly organised, and plainly showed that they had had'no practice. Tho backs on.both side played spasmodically. Tho Wellington forwards had the advantage in the scrum, but were not so good in the lineout or-in the ruck.' As is usual at the beginning of. the season, many rushes were marred by tho backs fumbling and failing to pick up the ball. All this is a matter of praotice, and one cannot expect to see "pretty" play, in a "first" game. From tho spectators' point of ■View the pime was . not, as a game, a very exciting or admirable one.
