TRYING A NEW LIFE-SAVEK. MemUsrs of- tho Richmond (Chrisj> church) Swimming Club, who are on a 'visit to Wellington,'have since their arrival last week been indulging in surfing at Lyall Bav, and have also paid visits to Te Aro Baths. On Saturday it was mentioned that tlioy were giving exhibitions with a new life-saving appliance,* which thev hold is a good deal better than the bolt and reel now in use on tho Lyall Bay beach. It is,_ however, something similar to tho appliance now in use in one respect—a' reel and line 13 used—but, in placo of tho belt, there is an airtight canvas bag, fish-shaped, about four feet long. Attached to each side are loop ropes and straps, the latter being used for "itlie purpose of securing an apparently drowned person to the appliance. In tho event of a person being seen in difficulties, tt}o lino man would run out in tho watci' with tho "invention," and pass }fc to the struggling person, who could either scramble on to it ,or secure ol grip in one of the loops. It then only remains for those who are in tho water to' stand by while tho ethers oil shore haul in the line. ,On Saturday afternoon a large number of interested swimmers and others watched a further exhibition. ' i It is understood Hiat members of both tho surf clubs at Lyall Bay contemplate securing one or two of tho new appliances when they aro on 'Clio market.
