o THE UNIVERSITY MATCHES, FIRST DAY'S PLAY. Some capital tennis was seen in the opening matches of tho University tournament, which was commenced at tho Wellington Club's courts on ■ Saturday. Tho conditions wero favourable, although a few drops of rain fell lato ill the afternoon. Altogether somo twenty matches wero played, but there is still a big'programmo to complete to-morrow, as in ono instance only have the semi-finals been decided. The singles between Dutliio (Auckland) and Parker (Wellington) provided a stirring contest, and somo splendid play was witnessed in the Men's doubles, notably in tho semi-final between Diithie and Campbell (Auckland) and Abernethy and Parson (Canterbury). PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT. < Palmerston North, March 22. Tho Wellington provincial championships opened lioro to-day. Tho only players of note attending Are Ollivier and Swnnson, who are expected to contest the final in tho championship singles. Tho ladies' champion singles was won by Miss Hartgill from Miss Bainl, after a good game, G-S, 7-5, G~3. The tournament will'be continued on Monday, and til© weather so far promises well.
