MADAME KIRKBY LUNN.

•' MADirME KIRKBY LUNN.

Madame Kirkby Lunn, the distinguished English contralto, arrived in Auckland yesterday, and inaugurates her New Zealand tour in that city to-night. After three concerts there the famous singer comes to Wellington, where her season of •three concerts takes place in the Town Hall on Tuesday, December 3, Thursday, December 5, and Saturday, December 7. The box plans for the season here will open on Wedntsday morning next at the Dresden Piano Co. At a recent appearance of Madame Lunn at Co vent' Garden, the London "Referee," writing about tho performance, said that Samson and Delilah" was one of tho most Successful operas of last season, and so long as Madame Lunn was available for tho part of Delilah, there would seem to be no reason why its popularity should diminish. To tho thoughtful observer Madame Lunn's success in this part is particularly a triumph of vocal timbre, and a witness to the subtle connection which exists between character and tone colour. It is doubltful if we shall ever have one whose quality of voice will bo more in consonance with the part, or who will sing it with greater allurement. After Madame Lunn created the part of Delilah 'at Covent Garden she was congratulated by th 9 composer M. Camille Saint-Saens, who said to her, "I must have been dreaming of a voice liko yours when I composed the opera." In. addition to the famous singer, Messrs. J. and. N. Tait are sending three most capable artists in Mr., William Murdoch ' (solo pianist), Mr. Andrfiv Shanks Cbaritone), and M. Andre De R>ibaurepierro (violinist).
