MARINE ENGINEERS.

COMBINED SMOKE CONCERT.

The social room of the Marine Institute of Engineers wns packed last night, when the Australasian Institute of Engineers and Hie Amalgamated Society of Engineers combined held a smoke concert. It was the first time that the two bodies have held a joint function, and Mr. Charles M'lntyre (representing the Amalgamated Society) expressed an, earnest wish that it would not bo the last. Mr. J. Rankin (representing the Marine Institute) and "r. M'lntyre presided. « Sir. D. Robertson proposed the toast of "Railwavs and Shipping." Mr. Robertson said that both were very important factors in the development of the Dominion. The railways particularly helped the country to produce its utmost, but that would bo useless if there' was not a steamer service to take _ the products away. Continuing, he said that there was a necessity for light lines, as well as "main trunks." Mr. G. Allport (secretary of Marine), in responding, said that the railways were something to bo proud of, and were a credit to the country. They were also a credit to the engineers who had bnilt them. Regarding shipping, the speaker said that there had been a remarkable expanse, which showed that the country v.-as progressing. Tn conclusion, Air. Allport stated that there were some really line steamers trading in aud out of New Zealand ports. Mr; J. P. Luke proposed tho toast of the two societies—the A.T.M.E. and the A.M.E., and Messrs. C. M'lntyre and J. Kankiu responded. The toast of "Parliament" was proposed by Mr. C. M'lntyre, and rcsnonded to by the Hon. C. M. Luke. Other toasts were, "The Merchant Servioe Guild" aud "Absent Friends."

Burin? the evening a number of musical items were contributed by the following: —Messrs. Ivnowles, Maude, M'Cornish, Pike, C'. M'lntyre, H. .T. Rule. F. C. Davie, and J. Znchariah. Mr. Mantel was the' accompanist.
