PALMERSTON BAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, August 19. The following members ot the local branch of St. John Ambulance Nursing Division have passed their examination: — ' I Miss D. Crabb, Jl. Dumbleton, Fitegerl aid, Paget (2),, and Mrs. hn Grange. Dr. Stowe. was the examiner. The Nehon Rugby football team arrived in I'almerston on Saturday night. They play the Manawatu representatives on Wednesday. The latter team • plays Wainirapa at Palmerston next Saturday. The dairy farmers of Kairanga are arranging to form n cow-testing association. A.meeting is called for next Thursday at the A. and P. offiqes, when Mr. D. Cuddie, Director of Dairy Produce, of tho Agricultural Department, will givo an address. The local Horticultural Society has appointed Mr. F. Amos secretary, and Messrs. Kingbur ( and A. Pickering have . been elected members of the committee. Mr. F. Vt. Mayo will judge the fruit nnd vegetables at the coming show; Mr. G. H. B. Rhodes, of Kata, will officiate in the cut flowers' division, and Mrs.. Rhodes the decorative classes. Mr. 4'. Hally, Commissioner of Conciliatio'n, held two sittings of the Conciliation Council here to-day.- The first was in connection with the application of f-ho Bookbinders and Paper Rulers for a now award. The, employers were represent- * ed by Messr*. H. Douglas, IT. A. Young, nnd 'AY. M'Kenx-ic, and tho uriion by Messrs. AV. Naiighton, R. Burns, and C. Jolinstone. Beyond agreeing on several minor points, tho Council did- not come, to any decision, the question of wages and horns being reserved for the Arbitration Court to fix. . The second sitting was in connection with tho application of tho Drivers' Union for a Dominion award, 'l'lie AVnugauui employers were represented by Messrs. A. E. Bennett null J. Aitcliisoii. The- Commisioner explained that the sittipg was merely a formal matter, and on the motion of Mr. Aitchieon the dispute was referred to tho Arbitration Court to deal with. Telegrams wore received by Mr. P. Hally (Conciliation Commissioner), whilst he was in I'almerston to-day, from the. Hokitika and Grey Valley Miners' Unions, the Tyneside Proprietary, nnd the briclcmalcers, asking him when he could go to the AYest Coast to assist in the settlement of the current disputes. Five hundred feet' of hose and other appliances will shortly be added to the local fire-fighting 1 plant. The impending addition wa3 mentioned at a meeting of the Palmerston Fire Board .yesterday.
