THE HINE CHARGES.

Sir,—l cannot say it surprises me, but I certainly am disgusted at the facts, recently dragged into daylight that show so clearly how the late Government has foisted on to the taxpayers of the Dominion the legal expenses of tho defendants in the matter of the Hino charges. Whilst theso gentlemen have dono bo well out of our pockets, I wish to point out that Mr. Hino has himself' had to hear all his own expenses in tho exposure ot matters in our public life that are at the least most reprehensible. This public service has cost him over ,£3OO It is now known to us that the Government refused to assist him, although ho is tho man who really had the right to assistance from tho public purse rathor tliau (lie individuals against whom he practically proved his charges! That tho late Government, in its dying hours, tried to rescind its previous refusal of help to Mr Hiiie, with tho object of muzzling him' and so, perchance, stifling further inquiry and that ho refused to bo thus entrapped is much' to his credit.

I think, sir, that it is up to every lover of fair play and straightforward dealing to seo that Mr. Hino does not go unrecognised for his meritorious action." If he will not consent to his expenses being made good.to him by public subscription —as might easily bo done—let us at tho least give him a handsome service of plate If this letter arouses interest, and anyone will take tho matter m hand, I shall willingly givo a couple of guineas.—l am, etc TAXPAYER."'
