ROADS AND RAILWAYS.

DEPUTATIONS TO THE MINISTER, Tho .Minister for Public Works (the Hon. W. I'raser) received a deputnt inn yesterday from the Knipara electorate, introduced bv the member fur tin* uKtrict (Mr. J. G. Ooates). 'J'lio deputation asked for an extension of the Kaihu Ynlley railway (running; from Dargavillo South) from Waima to Donnelly's crossing. It was represented that tliis extension of the line would make the railway l>ny. 1 They asked also that: a detailed survey should l)e made of the section of the' North Auckland Main Trunk lino from Korikopuni southwards to M'Carroll's Gap —this to enable the settlers in Korikopuni village to make their roads and build their shops and houses in suitable liositions. The Minister thought tho request for •! miles of railway was not an extravagant one, and promised to lay tho representations before Cabinet when the Authorisations Hill came to be considered. He also thought the application for a survey a reasonable one, but pointed out that he \yould havo difficulty in securing engineers to make it. Tho Moutere Fruitgrowers' Ass"elation, represented by Messrs. G. L. Tacon and T. Morrissey, mndo application to tho Minister for Public Works \esterdoy to havo two sections of road, iie':essnry to serve the recently settled fruitgrowing nrei)S in their district, formed and totalled. The sum involved was about .t'3loo ill all. The fruit-growers, it appeared, wefo willing to rate themselves, but the local body was slow to impose rates, and. slow to do tho work. The Minister informed tho deputation that it was scarcely likely that the Government would authorise the expenditure of money which the settlers ought to find themselves, saying that there were other places in New Zealand which were in worse plight tliap theirs could possibly lie. He would Rive tlie matter due consideration, however.
