A matter of interest to Wellington, and. it was said, to Wanganui, too, was introduced to tho Municipal Committee by Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh (Wellington). Tho motion was:—"That council bo given power to construct as public works, lifts and tunnels for the carriage of foot passengers where there aro steep declivities in streets, to raise special loans for such works on special rating areas, and to rato such areas not only in respect of tho charges for the loan, but in respect of loss oil working, and that tho council bo authorised to charge suitable fares and tolls for the use of such tunnels and lifts." Mr. Hindinai'sh said that a whilo ago there had been _ a proposal to instal a street lift in .Wellington, and that out of that proposal tho question had arisen. Tho motion was carried. i
