ARBOR DAY.
ON WEDNESDAY NEXT.
In past years tho interest in Arbor Day in Wellington has only been of a lukewarm character at the best. Dr. A. K. Aowman, M.l'., was the last Mayor to infuse n littlo life into the practical celebration of the day, and tho result of his enthusiasm lias been fairly satisfactory, llus year Arbor Day promises to bo inoi-e than n mero aimless holiday. Tlio present -Mayor (Mr. Jl'Lnrcn) lias evinced a solid interest in tree-planting, and the council is assisting groups of enthusiasts by supplying shrubs and seedlings for planting in various parts of the city. The Brooklyn Municipal Association intends to plant what is known as tho Sugar-loaf Iteserve on tho hill-sido overlooking Brooklyn, and other suburban bodies intend to act similarly. Arbor Day is to bo obsnrved as a public school holiday in tho Wellington Education District, and it is suggested that if tho scltolars would each, plant a tree there would soon l)o a return to tho vernal glories which inado Wellington such a haven of beauty when AVakefield and his pioneers arrived , in 1810.
