SATISFACTORY AWARDS. (Rec. May U, 11.50 p.m.) London, May U. The independent chairman of the. North Staffordshire Board gave awards that were satisfying to the miners. They range from ss. to Gs. 2d. for raen { and Is. 7d. to 4s. 10d. for boys. The Leicestershire awards are also satisfactory. WINDFALL FOE MINERS. London, May 13. Through the award by Lord Mersey, chairman of the Northumberland Conciliation Board, with respect to miners' wages being retrospective, the men will have a windfall of twenty thousand pounds in accumulated wages.
Tho newspapers report a wave of indignant disapproval of the award.
Mr. Straker, the general secretary of the Miners' Federation, complains that tho award does not grant tho ss. which all parties considered would be a reasonable minimum. Tho president of the- Federations considers the os. minimum worth fighting for; it would mean a considerable advance to many who are noST underpaid. TRADE UNIONISTS AND THE LAW. Sydney, May 14. Speaking at Litbgow, Mr. Beeby, Minister for Labour and Industry, declared that trades unionists would have to face the fact that a law prohibiting strikes exists, and as machinery for the settlement of disputes is provided, breaches of the law must carry tho penalties imposed by Parliament. He gave a warning that in case of any future strikes the Government would enforce the law.
