MOTOR CYCLES.

FOR THE CITY LIGHTING DEPARTMENT. The merits of motor-cycles wero discussed at some length by tho members of tho City Council last evening. The. Tramways Committeo recommended that three motor-cycles should be procured for tho city lighting department- ' Councillor Trevor moved as nn amendment that ono cycle only should be proThfi Mayor said that ho was advised that it was not a question of one cycle or throe, but of three or half a dozen. Councillor Barber indicated that, he would favour obtaining the cycles if an economy would thus bo effected, but he added that anyone who set out on a motor-cycle might get to his destination or might not. On tho whole, it was safer to rely on a tram. Mr. Richardson (Electrical Engineer) stated that the efficacy of motor-cycles hud been proved by the Post Othco. An officer of tho lighting department could do twico as much work as at present if he were provided with a motor-cycle. Councillor Shirtcliffe pointed out that Mr. : Richardson had stated, in a report, that unless the cycles were procured it would be necessary to employ another lighting inspector. . After an extended discussion, Councillor Trevor's amendment was defeated, and the recommendation of the committee wm adopted. ' .
