PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Spccial Correspondent.) Palmerston North, April 20. A large cortege iollo.ved the funeral of the late Mr. Andrew Jack to tho Palmerston North cemetery this afternoon. Masonic members of the Lodge Huia Lodge, Manawatu, Kilwinning, United Manawatu Lodge, Palmerston and Feilding Bowling Club?, Licensed Victuallers' Association, and prominent residents of the town and district wero present. The servico was conducted by tho Kov. A. Doull, following which Bro. Spooner, P.M. of Lodge Huia, conducted the Masonic service. At a meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday it was decided to increaso the subsidy to tho St. John Ambulance Socicty to JCSO per annum. Tho estimate of expenditure for tho ensuing year is .£5320 19s. lid., being a decrease of »£32 A on tho previous .year. Tho largest item of expenditure is for salaries—,£2osß. The. cost, of charitable aid is estimated at .£IOB7. The estimated expenditure on charitablo aid for tho same period is put down at ,£4BIB. It was reiolved to make a levy on tho local bodies of 3s. fld. in the .£IOOO capital value, Is. in the .£IOOO to bo allocated to charitable aid; also a levy of 2s. Od. in tho JOJOOO on tho capital value for crccting tho Old People's Ilomo at Awapuni. The Mayor has arranged (o call a public meeting shortly to discuss tho tram scheme. The Hinemoa Ladies' Hockey Club held a most enjoyable danco at tho Foresters' Hall last night. , There was a large attendance and a very pleasant time spent. At tho meeting of the Palmerston Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board yesterday Mr. J. G. Wilson was re-elected chairman.
