(From Our Special Correspondent.) MANGAROA. A correspondent describes "election night" at tho Jlangaroa School as follows:—"On Monday ni|{lit', tho first limo for somo years, a niiinbcr of those interested in tlio flection of n .School Committee nltended at tho district school. Some, wort- bashtul, others bold, unci most felt somewhat as boys feel ut a new game, for some harl been at the school and had occupied the same, scats in days gone by. All wailed patiently for tho commissioner, who living some distance away, was late. At a few minutes past eight he entered. The greetings were- friendly mid colloquial, and the smiles brond. Some of the candidates, being young and unaware of what might bo required of them ;is committeemen, asked what their duties were. The commissioner briefly told them. 'Don't we liavo anything to do with the teaching?' and 'Can't we say what our children shall or shall not bo taught?' asked on<fc '.No,' sharply replied the commissioner, 'nothing to soy en that point.' 'Well,' retorted the other, 'wo should have.' 'My children ' Here a hearty laugh interrupted him. 'Why,' said :i .young man, 'you haven't any. 'Lot's get on, , ' , growled another, 'it's getting late'— all hough to bo sure the proceedings had just begun. So they got to business. Tho commissioner read the head teacher's report for the year, and nominations were made; but, sad to state, tho elector who wished to teach the teacher was left till tho last, and when a friend proceeded to nominate him, tho commissioner called: 'Nominations closed.' Eight nominations, seven wanted, and so votes were taken and the seven young men were made committemen, with the weal or woo of the school (and the teacher) in their hands for a year. It's a. great thing—this electing of committees." OTAKI. The. following nominations have been received for the positions of wardens on the Otnki Eoad Board:—Messrs. G. Crabb, .1. D. Howell, W. M'Kegg, A. Drake, J. Hildreth. As there are five vacancies an election will not be necessary. OTAKI. The hockey seasoa opened here on Wednesday, when the two local ladies' teams met, Otaki defeating Taimri (a newlyformed club) by four goals to one The match was played in tho rain. CARTERTON. An effort is being made to Tevive boxing in Carterton. Mr. T. J. Kathbonc, of Carterton, has just returned from a fortnight's holiday spent at tho Bay of Islands. Miss Livingstone, of Car'erton, has taken over Miss O'Brien's musical clientele in Martinborough. Miss O'Brien is leaving the township, shortly. The death is recorded of Mrs. Annie Oates, wife of Mr. Joseph Oates of l'aikiate. The deceased lady had not enjoyed the best of health for some time, aiid the death of a son accentuated matters. Deceased was the only daughter of the late Mr. J. M. Jury/ ono of Wairarnpa's pioneers. '
