Carl Ander.-on's granary at Sanson was destroyed by firo hist night, along witli 300 sacks of fine Algerian oats and 20 tons of clialV. Trucks of grain on a siding had a narrow escape, being saved by neighbours running tho trucks out from the aiding. PAPERS AMALGAMATE. Dannevirke, April 23. An important business transaction, involving the salo uf the "Dannevirko Advocate" to tho Dannevirko Publishing Company, was successfully negotiated last week. The terms agreed upon, are satisfactory to both parties, and the transaction was amicably arranged. The "Advocate" will, from .May 1, be incorporated in tho "Dannevirke Evening News." FIRE AT ASHBURTON. Ashburton, April 23. Shortly after five o'clock this morning, an eight-roomed two-stor.v wooden house at Trevorton, owned and occupied by .Mrs. Rattray, was, with ifc> contents, totally destroyed by lire. Tho Christchurcb Tramway Board made a profit for the year oiuled March 31 of £2531, after paying all ch_argcs. The gross earnings totalled ,£124,017, and operating expenses ,£71,011. An inquest will be held. CASE OF SUICIDE. Ashburton, April 23. A married man named Charles Edwin Jefl's, a butcher, commit led suicide late this afternoon. The body was found in an outhouse at his residence in Ashburton by his brother-in-law at 5.-10 p.m. Deceased, who was a well-known resident and a fairly young man, had just disposed of his interest in a butchery business. He was last seen alivo at 3.30 p.m. Though deceased left a farewell note, the contents have not transpired, and the reason for his suicide is as .yet unknown, the news coming as a shock. WATER DIVINING. Invercargill, April 23. At the invitation of the Invercargill Town Council, tho Rev. H. Mason, t/ie water diviner, is at present paying a visit to the town. The object of Mr. Mason's stay is to see if lie can discover sufficient water underground tc warrant the extension of the present deep-well system of water supply. Yesterday and to-day Jlr. Mason has made remarkable discoveries of great underground supplies of wafer in many parts of tho town, and his work will probably lead to the introduction of a most complete supply. The use of • his "uncanny" powers is creating much interest. AUCKLAND EXHIBITION. Auckland, April 23. A donation of 200 guineas was made by the Harbour Board to-day to the forthcoming exhibition, half to be payable in 1912 and tho remainder in 1913. FOUND IN THE HARBOUR. Auckland, April 2J. At the inquest on the body of' a child which was found by a fishing boat on Sunday, evidence was given to thc i effect that the body was that of a male infant aged 10 months. It was impossible to determino tho cause of death. The body u;as well nourished, and there were no ante-mortem marks of violence. A verdict was returned to tlie effect that the cause" of death was unknown. PRESENTATION TO AN EX-M.P. New Plymouth, April 23. At Waitara last night Mr. W. T. Jennings, ex-member for Taumarunui, was presented with, a purse of 100 sovereigns by his old constituents. There was a very large gathering, and Messrs. Laurenson* and Buck were present and made congratulatory speeches. Ma - . Jennings announced that he would contest the seat against all-comers at the next election. BOROUGH TROUBLE ENDED, Wanganui, April 23. What is known as "the Borough Engineer trouble," which has extended over some months, was ended this evening, when the Borough Council decided to accept. as satisfactory the explanation made by the engineer.

AUCKLAND TROUT SEASON. Auckland, April 23. The fishing season will close at tho end of next month. The president of tho Acclimatisation Society informed a "Herald" representative that tho fishing hail not been as good this year as in previous years. This was accounted for by the fact that the trout were very late this season in going up the rivers to spawn. Tho fish had nlso been smaller than they were last season. It is expected, however, that trout will be more plentiful in the rivers during the next few weeks. With respect to a complaint that trout nt Lake Taupo were affected with worm, Mr. Hazard states that, while some of the fish were undoubtedly suffering in this way, tho complaint was not general. As a matter of fact many visitors and other fishermen had caught good healthy fish at Taupo. ,

BRIEF MENTION. Dunedin, April 2.1. Wm. Peak, a labourer. 28 years of ago, diod in Clyde Hospital last night as tho result of falling off a haystack on April 20. His spine was fractured. BHOOTING SEASON. Auckland, April 23. On Wednesday next the shooting season opens, and imported game (including pheasants and California!! quail and native duck and teal) are reported to lie plentiful in most parts of tho Auckland district. In tho more settled parts of tho district, of course, the birds are not so' numerous. THE MILTON FIRE. Dunedin, April 23. In connection with the firo at _ Messrs. Gray and Son's premises, at Milton, it is stated that the insurances were ,£2OOO on the stock, which wns valued at ,£3OOO, and .£250 on tho building, which was valued at ,£250.
