MASTERTON NOTES.

(Bj Telesraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, March 20. A concert in honour of St. Patrick's Day was held in the Town nail this evening. Among tho contributors were Misses Segrief, Parrel], and Twohill, and Messrs. Davo Kenny and R. Newton, of Wellington. At the annual meeting of the Masterton Chess and Draughts Club, tho following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mr. James Brown; president, Mr. F\ W. H. Kummer; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Jones and J. T. Dagg; committee, Messrs. W. J. Gibson, C. Winchester, W. Hood, Sedcolc, and Wilkerson; secretary, Mr. K. Welch; treasurer, Mr. T. J. Thompson. It was decided that tho seasbn bo opened with a sides match on Monday, April 15. It is not expected that settlers in the East Coast districts will be able to secure burns of bush and scrub this season, so wet has the season been.

A juryman named Edward George Amoro was fined 20s. in tho Supreme Court yesterday for failing to answer his name when called.

Tho annual sports meeting in connection with the Forty-Mile Bush Athletic Society was held at Uamua to-day. A number of Masterton pedestrians competed. In excusing a farmer, who had dairy cows to attend to, from further service on (ho jury in tho Supreme Court, Judge Edwards stated to-day that the country districts had asked for sittings of the Supreme Court to be established, and then soma of tho people asked to be excused from sitting on tho jury. His Honour suggested that the Justice Department be petitioned for a reversion to the old order of things. It is probable that the sitting of the Supreme Court in this town will occupy the wholo of the present week. Judge Edwards stated to-day that it. might bo necessary to' adjourn the sitting, as he had a sitting of /the Appeal Court in Wellington next week.
