A NEW HAY ELEVATOR.
THE FIRST OF ITS KIND. A new style of hny elevator which has just been imported from England by Mr. Jas. Prouse of Levin is, according to tho "Chronicle," attracting nmcli attention among local farmers. So far as is known this is the first elevator of its kind to be used in New Zealand. The field is cleared of hay by means of a twenty-one feet sweep, which is drawn by two horses. This was contracted by Mr. Prouse, the main gate being made of blue gum, and the teeth of rata. The beam is made ,ot' blue gum also, and is ten feet long. Tho hay is thus gathered up and taken to the foot of the elevator, which is driven by horse gear, and the hay is fed into tho elevator by three men when the stack is eight feet high. As the stack increases iii height, the elevator is gradually brought near.er, so that with an elevator such as Mr. Prouse's a stack 10 feet high may be built. It works with great rapidity and takes two men on the top of the stack all their time to lay the hay as it is hoisted up. On Wednesday a stack, which under ordinary circumstances would take from one and a half to two days to build, was put up within eight hours. A particular feature about tho elevator is that it saves tue heavy manual labour oi pitching tho hay on to the stack.
