The news that Mr. Allan Thomson, New Zealand's first Rhodes scholar, has received the degree of D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) was heard with much pleasure by members of Parliament, among whom his father, 31r. G. M. Thomson, M.P. for Dunedin North, has many friends. Dr. Thomson is nt present in the -Marlborough district on a geological expedition. It will bo remembered that he was appointed geologist to Captain Seotfs Antarctic expedition, but the then stato of his health compelled him to resign the post. He has now quite recovered, and the securing of the highest scientific honour that New Zealand can bestow will do much to make up for the disappointment in connection with Antarctic work.

Mr. .M. 1\ Cordia, sub-manager of the Ho.val Packet Steam Navigation Company, of liatavia and .Sydney, is at present enjoying a holiday tour of the Dominion. He is to write a series of articles on New Zealand for the Dutch press. Mr. and Mrs. fiQondrctt, of Singapore, are visitors to Wellington. Mr. Harold Ashton, of the managerial staff of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., left for Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. John Baillie, of tho Uaillio Art Gallery, London, was to havo left London by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Remuera on Thursday. Ho is bringing with kirn a selection of lino paintings by English artists of repute, which he hopes to dispose of to tho art galleries of New Zealand. Mr. H. C. Tewsley, Wellington manager of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, leaves on n trip to England shortly.. Mr. William Duthie, of tba firm of Jclin Duthie and Co., leaves on a trip to London via Australia and tho Suez Cannl towards tho end of the month. The Rev. W. Shircr and Mrs. Shiror, of St. James's Church, Wellington South, were entertained at a "welcome home" social by the members of tho congregation on Thursday evening. The Rev. Georgo Mahoney, irbo has boon transferred to Hastings as a.ssistont to the Very Rev. Father Keogh, itas on Thursday evening presented with a ca-rved walking-stick, travelling rug, and a pair of ivory-backed hair brushes by his friends in the Island Bay district. The presentation, which was made by Mr. P. J. O'Regan, took place in the Catholic School at Island Bay.

Mr. A. P. Roberts, of Murray, Roberts, and Co., Duixedin, will bo in chargo of the firm's business in Wellington during the absence in England of Mr. A. H. Miles. Mr. Roberts arrived from Uho south yesterday. The members of the "Speckled Band" Dramatic Company left for Sydney by the Mocvnki yesterday afternoon. The company is to open in Melbourne on Saturday week in "Alias Jimmy Valentine," after which Conan Doyle's play, "The House of Temperley," will be produced. Archbishop Wright, Primate of Australia, returned to Wellington from the south by the Maori yesterday morning. The Rev. Mr. Older was vesterday inducted to tho charge of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Wanganui, tho llev. Mr. M'Cully performing the corein ony of induction, and tho Rev. Mr. Porter preaching the sermon.—Special correspondent. Mr. A. .T. Park, of Dunedin, has been appointed to the staff of tho S.M. Court at War.ganui, telegraphs our special correspondent. Among the visitors occupying seats on tho floor of the Legislative Council yesterday were Mr. and Mrs. Wooding (tingland) and Miss Wooding. Mrs. Wooding is a sister of Mr. H. H. Asquith, Prime Minister of Great Britain.
