PERSONAL ITEMS.

His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Shannon, A.D.C., arrived from Gisborne by the Slonowai yesterday morning. His Excellency will* remain in Wellington over the coming short session of Parliament. Lady Islington is to leave Kotorna for Auckland, to-morrow. After the session, his Excellency will also go to Auckland, whore the next two months will be spent.

Major-General Godley returned from the- south yesterday, and proceeded to the camp at Oringi.' Ho will return to headquarters to-morrow. Messrs. Jas. Colvin and M'Callum, M.IVs for Duller and Marlborough respectively, arrived, here by the Pateena last evening. ■>

At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Presbytery, the llev. J. Kennedy Elliott, of ihe Keit Terrace Church, announced that he was about to pav a visit to the Old Country, and the itov. Mr. Shirer was appointed to act as moderator of the Kent Tcrraco congregation iluring his absence. The members of the presbytery all expressed the heartiest wishes that Mr. Elliott's trip would be lenciicKil and enjoyable. Arrangements as to a supply for Mr. Kennedy's pulpit will bo subsequently reported 'on U the presbytery.

Mr. Honry Sargcant, a well-known resident of Wanganui, uutl ono of tho oldest settlers in the district, died on Monday evening (telegraphs our correspondent). The deceased go'.itleman, who wis a native of Gloucestershire, England, arrived in New Zealand over 50 years ago. He came to the Wanganui district scon after his arrival, and took up land at Fordell and Wangaohu, engaging in sheep-farming, which occupation ho carried on very successfully for several years. After a. very activo country life, Air. Sargcant retired to town, where he took a great interest in public institutions, particularly in educational matters, lie was a prominent member of tho Museum Committee pud the Astronomical and Philosophical Societies, being a trustee of the two former bodies. Mr. Sargeant was also a director of the Castlecliil' Railway Company.

Mr. Win. H. Murray, Mayor of Grey Lynn, is in-Wellington, in connection with the annual mooting of the New Zealand Boot Manufacturers' Association. Mr. Jas. Hislop has taken up his new duties as Under-Secretary for Internal A flairs.
