A CARNIVAL WEEK.
NEW LIGHT ON THE "INDUSTRIES 1 DISPLAY.
A letter was received at yesterday's meeting of the Industrial Association from Mr. J. Dykes, secretary of tho NewZealand Competitions Society-, on (he subject of establishing a ca'rnival week on lines which have already been detailed iu these columns. , In the course of a general discussion on the subject of combining in some way to invent attractions for a carnival week, Mr. 11. T. Allen (secretary) rather damped the ardour of some by stating that he did not think the promotion of a "local industries' w.cek" would bo received with any enthusiasm in, Wellington in view of the experience several shopkeepers had when the last one was held. One shopkeeper had informed him that industries week had meant a loss to him, and if they wanted him to participate in another they would have to pay him at least „El 5. Ho (Mr. Allen) was sorry to say that there wero others who thought the same way—the idea was pretty general. The shopkeepers said it was a splendid advertisement for the manufacturers, but it was no good to the shopkeepers, who displayed for the occasion nothing but the local manufacturer's goods.
After a desultory discussion, the chairman (Mr. L. K. Partridge) said that they might take into consideration tho question of how they might a.ssist to bring about a carnival week. Peraonallv he thought it mould be a good thing for the city. «i;id he was willing to join with anyone to help things along. The competitions had been a great success, a.ad had brought a lot of people to Wellington. Mr. C. B. Norwood said that the idea was a good one if the association roulil see clearly in what manner it could assist. He would move that the president and secretary wait upon the chairma,'i of the Competitions Society iu order to get their views as to how they could help the movement, and reirort at tho next meeting. This was agreed to.
