SWIMMING.
An extended disagreement as to tho best swimmer in. the General Post Offico was settled on Saturday at To Aro Baths when thirteen of the parties thereto faced tho starter—somo for tho ', first timo in their lives. Tho agitation had been made as interesting as possible to the supporters of each competitor by allotting handicaps on the principle that those not likely to cover the distance (50 yards) woul'd bo rescued by those who could. All modes of swimming wero adopted, from the ancient doR-paddle to the present century crawl, out tho close finish was mainly tho result of an eager competitor swimming a circular course. C. Joseph Gamble (15sec.) won by a. touch from W. Gilbert (9sec), with K, Pullar (15scc.) a foot behind.
