0 DEATH OF MR. HUGH POLLEN. Mr. Hugh Tollen, who died late oil Thursday night, was appointed secretary, to tho Colonial Secretary's Department, now known us tho Department of Internal Affairs, in 1891. Ho succeeded Mr. Geo Sissou Cooper, under whom he had served for maiiv years, latterly as chief clerk. Mr. Pollen was born in March, 1851, and entered tho public service oil April 17, 1872. Had be lived until April next, Mr. Pollen would have completed a period of tO 1 years in tho servico of his country. At one stago in his oareer Mr. Pollen acted its private secretary to his father, the late Hon. Dr. Pollen, who was Prime Minister from .Tulv 0, 1875, to February 15, 1876. Mr. Pollen is survived by a widow, two sons, and a daughter. Ho was a member of tho Wellesloy Club for many years, and iD his vouhrot days belonged to tho Wellington football Club. Later lie was a member of tho Thorndon Bowling Club. Yesterday flags on tlio public buildings were ilown at half-mast out of rcsiwct. to Mr. Pollen's memory. Tho funeral will leavo Mr. Pollen's late rosironco, Hanson Street, at 3 p.m. to-day for tho Kurori Church cemetery. ' Sir Joseph Ward yesterday sent the following memorandum to all heads of Departments"lt is with deep regret that I have to adviso officers of tho public servico of the death last evening of Mr. Hugh Pollen, Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs. The dooeased gentleman during a long period of years filled his -responsible position with' conspicuous zoal and ability, and in his domino tho people of the Dominion have lost a devoted servant, and the Government and tho public servico a most exemplary officer. I have conveyed to Mrs. Pollen and her family thio sincere sympathy of tho Government in tho deep bereavement which has befallen them." Mr R. F. Lynch, chief clerk of the Department of internal A flairs, will tako chargo in the meantime.
