(By TcleEraph-Presß Association.) ♦ SENTENCES. Wanganui, December 29. Albert Thomas Skallio '-as charged at tlio Magistrate's Court (.his morning with breaking into a, store at Mnkirikiri. The charge was reduced to wilfully damaging property. Accused pleaded guilty, and was fined JGIO, in default two months' imprisonment. A young man named E. R. Floyd was sentenced to thirty days' imprisonment for theft of a watch, which he snatched from another man in an hotol.
THAT WATERSPOUT. Dunedifl, December 29. A -visit to the North-East Valley this morning disclosed the fact that if ono portion of Lindsay's Crsek had been cleared of boulders there would have been very little flooding last night. The water got dammed up, broke across the lowlyiug township of Glenroy, and met a quantity of surface water at the gardens. The unfortunate effect is that many residents are alarmed, and have intimated' their intention to give up their houses. One landlord has already received notjeo of the intention, of six of his tenants to quit, The rain cleared up at two o'clock this morning, and the waters zre now rapidly subsiding.
THUNDERSTORM. Eketahuna, December 29. Heavy rain last night blocked the culverts. A violent thunderstorm followed, several windows being broken by concussion. Tho lightning was vivid. A number of telephones were fused.
THE CURRENT WETNESS. Timaru, December 29. Tho long continuance of showery weather appeared to havo ended yesterday morning, ivhen the sun was shining hot from nearly a clear sky. In tho afternoon, how.ev.er, the sky again clouded over, and for, about twelve hours (from i p.m.) heavy rain fell steadily, giving a total of 1.31 inches. All the rivers are. in high flood. Stock had to bo shifted from the riverbed paddocks, and several parties of picnic campers were flooded out. Tho water overflowed the railway line near Otaio this morning, but soon receded, and not has been received that oue up-country bridgo (at Tengawai) lost its approaches. .'■
FOR HIGHLAND TASTES. Timaru, December 29. Entries for the Now Year Caledonian sports arc very satisfactory. The runners include Trembath and Jl'Lachlan, as well as local moil. Some North Island cyclists appear.' . HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. Timaru, December 29. _ The local holiday traffic by rail this season has considerably exceeded any previous record.
