AT AWAFUNI.

THE ROMP HOME IN THE CUP. MR. MESSENA'S WIN. (By Telorraph.—Special Correspondents Palmerston, December 2G. Although rain had bceu falling intermittently for days, and a heavy shower fell this morning, the weather was fine, but cool and cloudy, for tho first day's meeting of the Mnnawatu Racing Club. There was, consequently, ,a large attendance, and the sum of «£22,f1(i7 was put through the totalisator. This sum was .£7400 more than was machined last Boxing Day, which' was tho second day of that' meeting. The course was fairly heavy, especially towards the conclusion of. tho day, when tho turf had been cut up a good deal. There wern big lields in tho majority of tho .events, and some very lino finishes— notably .in tho. Filzherbert, Tarar'ua, and Grandstand Handicaps. The feature of the racing was the somewhat sensational win of Mr. MesSena's aged marc Wnipaku in tho Cup, who led from . almost start to finish. She had a break which, at times, ranged' up to twelve lengths on the field, and she, ultimately wbii'by three or four lengths, and paid' the biggest dividend of Ilio day." Amongst sporting men present from all parts of the province were Sir Jamrs Carroll, Messrs. D. Buick and IT. M. Campbell, M.P.'s. and Messrs. J. B. Hareonvt, AV. K. Bidwill, R'-.T. Lysha.r, \V. NOTKS ON THE RACING. (By Tclcgraiih.-Sijecial Correspondent.! .Palmerston, December 2(j. Tiie fir.-t lace brought out a field of eleven, from which Nukuatu was iiKide u much wanner favourite than Kinsjs\vvll. Aviator hopped off in front from a good s-tart, but was (|iiickly passed by Tripoli, who then led all the way, and won somewhat easily by two and si half lengths. Ktoi:kiidc ran'very well for four furlongs, while Elkmaid was also prominent in the early part of tin; race. Stellaris occupied a. commanding position in the straight, but was then cut down by Kingswell, who came with a late run. The Tokomaru Hurdles, in which there won; seven starters, was practically n contest between Leolanter and Ijongner, who was a warm favourite, with more than a quarter of the'totalizator money oil him. Tyrannic led for the h'rst halfmile, when he was <li?pl*vced by Longner, who was then attended by Leolauter, but managed to hold first position almost into tho straight. Here Leolanter put forward a strenuous challenge, and won a very line race by two lengths. Te Ku was prominent in parts of ihe race, but died right away.

Thirteen started . for. the Gillies Hack Handicap. Sanguinary, Seraphic, . and Lady- Kilcheran were each allowed an apprentice allowance of jib., and Sanguinary Was made a strong favourite. The start was a siraggling one, from which Taonui emerged in front, followed by Turna and Portland .Lady, both well up". A furlong from home, Turna headed Mr. Buicli's gelding, and looked an easy winner. Half-way down the straight, however, he was 'hotly challenged by Parewanui, but managed to stall it off, and won, all out, by half a length. Taonui was ' one 'ength away third. Millbank and SoMphic collided when the' barrier rose, and this no doubt greatly affected Seraphic's chailce.of winning.' ' Tho raco'for tho Maiiawatu Cup was responsible for a somewhat' sensational "boil over , ' victory. This was scored by Mr. Mossona's aged marc AVaipaku, whey ridden by a Lilliputian jockey (A. Hoed), made every post a winning post, almost from the start, and wa.s never headed. At one lime AVaipaku was nearly twelve lengths ahead of Marline, Mevrivonia, and company. She was never le-s than four lengths out, and the spectacle ot the outsider leading such a held was cue which was received with cheers bv a thoroughly impartial crowd. The rider of the winner weighed 7!lb. Miich interest was centred in the race. Fourteen acceptors went to the post,' and Marline was made a strong selection, with MNcal, MeiTivjuia, and Brown Trout in that order. Martine, Mcrrivonia, and Abcrbrothock had the inside running, but all calculations were upset by the pace set by Waipaku, who was expected to come back, but never did s.O to the extent required by her pursuers. Espartero and iMj; Antrim were prominent for half a mile, while Abcrbrothock and Merrivonia ami bir Antrim lasted the race out with all escept Wnipaku. It" is considered that lndifterent riding was shown in allowing AVaipaku (o get such a big lead. On returning fp the saddling paddock, the. rider of AVaipaku was loudly cheered. Considering the fairly heavy nature of tho ground, the tinie must be considered very (joqd. • ■■ .. The Juvenile Handicap produced the smallest field of the day, five horses outgoing to tho post. Kangiatua, who was a somewhat better favourite than Bronze hopped out first, and led for two furlongs, Bronze and lin.aginn.lion being in attendance. ■Entering , ".the straight, Bronze put in a claim, and won by . three lengths frdm Kangiatua, who was half a length in front, of Imagination. The Tararua Hack Welter was responsible for the defeat of another favourite in Ovation, who was slightly better fancied than, Odessa. There wore eleven starters. Blakeney and Pot Luck were first out from a fairly good start, and Blakeney led almost to the straight. Here Odessa, under tho spur, got a clear run on the rails, and, coining through, won rather easily by a length. Bonnie Boy and bteveus also passed Blakeney well down the straight. Ovation did not get away too well, and-was never seen prominently. The finish amongst Herinia, Lady Moutoa, Mon Ami, and' Gladiole was tho finest of the day, all four horsos finishing m- a 'line. Hermia was a slightly better favourite thau Gladiole, who was greatly fancied in doubles with Martine in the Oup. Hermia delayed Ilio starters as usual, and, on-one occasion, upset her jockey. An excellent start saw Hermia, Wadiole, and Lady Mouloa away in the lead. At the four-furlong post the first two were still in front, and led well up the straight, where Lady Moutoa and Mon Ami made a desperate effort, and, cuttiiifr down Cladiole yard by yard, almost reached Hermia, who just managed to win by halt a head. Gladiole showed up well, and is evidently improving. Polymorphous, who seemed to bo hardly fit was fifth and Thetis last. Next to the Manawatu Cup, in which -£■1198 was invested on the machine, the Grandstand Handicap was the heaviest betting race of the dav.
