NOTES ON THE RACING; (Br Tolosrapb.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, December- 2U. Never did the Ellerslio racecourse present'siich an animated appearance as was the case this afternoon. Tho bad weather of Into had prevented people from going out of the'city, and in consequence .when it cleared'up at 11 o'clock this morning, thousands upon thousands flocked to-tho racecourse. Every available means of locomotion, was freely patronised, and it is • estimated that fnlly 30,000 ' persons ' were scattered, over - the grounds when the Cup was .run. The totalisator-turnovst;was a record.for tho club and for the -.Dominion. .Nothing of an untoward nature occurred,. and the racing'was-pleasant to watch. '. Rather a. surprise came about over, the decision of the Clip, mid had Santa Rosa not been bracketed with the well-favoufe'd Waimangu he w'ould probably have paid a' very big dividend. 'As it wAV, the result was a great surprise'to most people'. There was not a semblance;-6f' a flul;e about .the win, which ' was comfortably Rained. ' Waimangii,' ' Counterfeit, 'and Miscount.carried.the best condition, but in the-preliminary nothing weilt'better tliini Domino, albeit he was closely rivalled by Waiiriangu. ■ They were a very little tinie at the barrier before Jlr. O'Connor pressed the button. When they settled down, Counterfeit was pulling very hard. Bellah led down tho back. Across the' top they spread out a. lot, tho rear being brought up by Mendip. Running into -tho straight the first time Goldfincler displaced tho leaders, and was in the van. Passing the post'tho first time Meudip was' in tho salne "position just behind Midnight Sun, with the rest of the field in good enough positions. At the' sevenfurlong prxst Domino was rushed to tho front, and Counterfeit dropped in behind him, and had'Waimangii as a companion. The leader was out by himself at the turn, but Midnight Sun, Maxwell, and Corpmandel were all coming. -As they swept into the straight, Mr.' Watt's colt - was carried 'wide,- but he ran' on gainely.' Santa Rosa' next appeared, and ilia twiuklinghe:had.col!flr?d the leader, and-was not again troubled over the final furlong. Counterfeit faltered, and SouWoria, who finished strongly, was ..ib!o to cut her out of third money, the ■next to finish being Coromand-el, Maxwell, ' Miss Mischief, Waimangu, and 'Midiiight'Sun, with Mendip, Duma, and Ngapuka. tajled 0ff.,,,,, „;,„......,..,. .. .' ... ;-T.jip Vof her''events , 'saw- some , ' wariii '■ favourites, go astray, notably Ermengarde and Equitas. The defeat of the former can bo put down to instability. Admitting that sho ran wide at the first t,urn, .still Winning AVay was always going 'easily in tho van. , ;. Equitas found- the weight too much iup '■ the hill, 'and' when. Gipsy Belle ran up to her she could go no faster. The Porirua maw was a. comfortable winner, and seems to be very well just now. The 1 visiting horses hardly held their own with the northerners, and on such an uneven course it takes a' good horse not used to the track-to win. Delegate won the Graf ton Hurdles from a furlong upwards, but he would have had to ;;0 a'lot faster had not the rider of Montigo broken his gear early in tho race. The I'eilding-trained Reuinac ran badly, being in tho rear the whole way. Prince Soult, the high-priced full-bro-ther to Master Soult, gave a creditable display in (lie Nursery Handicap. He was 'toing ridden at the turn, but won easily at the finish, St. Felix was well backed in the Christmas Handicap, but he showed no form at all, and was tailed off the whole way. The winner is a really smart three-year-old, bul has the reputation of being unreliable.
