A WELL-KNOWN SPORTSMAN.
Tarana Uliku Maruniaru, the wellknown Ngatiapa chief, of Parawanui, died at 5 p.m. on Sunday, nt the ago of 18 yca'rs. Tiirauii was a man of decided note among his people, and widely related among rungitirii families. He was wellknown as a sportsman, and was successlull, as was his father, both as a breeder mid racing man. Raugipubi, bred by To .Maruniaru and raced by Taraua, won tho Hawke's Bay Cup of )S9l, and the Palmerston, finneitikei, I'cilding, and Dunedin Cups, and tho Thompson Handicap (Wellington). Among tho holies of his breeding wero Muriwai, ■St. Joe, Apn, and KfjuUns. Taraua whs up to . his death trustee for the Ngatinpa, and acted as chairman of tho Kuroliaupo .Maori Council for many years. He took a keen interest in athletics, and pivo the .Maruniaru Cup for the Maori Tennis Championship of tho North Islaml. The competition for this cup hadk> be postponed last year owing to the death of Wild .Marumaru. It was held at l'almorston last Enstor. This year it wan to have bwn held in Hawku's Bay, but will again be postponed on account of the. death of tho donor and patron. Dr. J'omare. M.J , ., was at the liouso as a visitor at tho time of his (loath, and Dr. Watson, of Bullk. hus been attending tho patient. Sir .liunos Carroll went out on Monday intending to go to tho hui at J'urawaiiui, but on hearing of tho death paid his respects to the deceased rangitiru' at his place and returned without going on to the meeting. ]t is expected that Urn intormont will tako place, in the fnmily burial place on the estate in about a week, mid the lnu|?i will meantime procccd.—".Miinnwiilu Daily Times.
