Two new cars, were authorised for construction during the current year. The Meteorological Department was granted the use of the small reserve at the eastern cud of the Thorndon Ksplanade, so long as the land is not required for railway purposes, on payment of a nominal rental of ."is. per annum. Xo action, it was suggested by the Tramways Committee, should be. taken at present in connection with tho purchase of an electric car for the conveyance of manure to the proposed manure depot at Lyall Boy. The Mayor explained that such a car would cost about ,£120(1 to build, an expenditure which the corporation was not prepared to face at present. Several councillors dissented from the suggestion that » policy of laissez-faire should lie adopted, contending, that the question of arranging for the disposal of manure from the various stables was an urgent one, and could readily hs bv the provision of a cheap and serviceable electric wagon It was eventually agreed to get a joint report from the City Engineer end the Electrical Engineer framed on the basis of a cheaper service than that set forth in the estimate previously drafted.
