ONE GOES TO THE GOVERNMENT.

Voting in tho election of Parliamentary representatives of the Northern, Western, and Southern Maori districts concluded yestordny at i p.m. The only final relum which has yet come to hand is that from the .Southern district, where Mr. C. R. l'arata has been elected with a majority of 31. Dr. Pomaro is practically certain to retain his position at tho head of the poll in the Western district. Returns have come to hand from about twothirds of (bo booths in tho Northern district, and the return of Dr. To Rangihiroa, who at present heads the list, is regarded as probable. As has been previously announced, the Hon. A. T. Ngata was returned unopposed in tho Eastern Maori district. It is understood that both Dr. Pomarc and Mr. Parata will vote with the Reform party, and as all the. Maori seats woro formerly held by supportors of the Ward Government, yesterday's polls (presuming that Dr. Poma're is elected) mean a pain of two votes in the 'House for Mr. Massey. Dr. Maui Pomaro was born at Pahou, under the shadow of Mount Egmont, and is in his thirty-fifth year. Ho then went to America, and studied modicino, taking his M.D. degree at tho Chicago University. Parata, who for twenty-six years sat in tho House of Representatives as member for the Southern Maori District. Ho is connected with three of the principal South Island tribes, and is a direct descendant of the famous navigator Tamatea, who was the chief who directed the Takitimu canoe to the shores of New Zealand.
