DESTRUCTIVE SMALL BIRDS

TUB NiP CROPS RUINED. The small birds have been exceedingly destructive amongst tho young turnip crops throughout the Clutha district this year, says tho "Leader." It is reported that one farmer has had 30 acres absolutely ruined, and that there are numbers of others who havo fared badly. The young rape has suffered nearly as severely. Host of the farmers who have been able to save their crops havo had to watch, from, daylight till dark, and wit[i pea-rifles, guns, and tin cans try to keep tho ■birds olf. Tho sparrows are not so destructive as the linnets, and another bird resembling the goldfinch, which appears to be new this year. As .soon as. the young plant gets into a double leaf tho danger is past.
