TIMARU WHARF TROUBLE.
(Bj Toleeranli.—Prcfs AFioclatlon.l Timaru, December 12. ' The wharf strike extended to-day as the men employed by the Railway. Department on the, wharves refused to handle Oreson timber slung by the Chinese crew of the .steamer Anerlcy. The permanent railway hands then sent it to the wharf. A deputation of strikers waited on the Mayor to protest against this, and Mr. Crnigio wired to the Premier their request; that it be stopped. The consignees of the timber offered to pay the rates demanded by the strikers, but the latter refused this, except: under a general agreement with all the shipping agents. To-night the Mayor received a telegram from the Premier, stating that he' was getting the facts, and could not allow Hie railwaymen to work with a Chinese crew. He must, however, have (lie full facts before dealing with the matter. The steamer Pnkoha should have loaded IiOOO bales of wool, but lias gone to Wellington without it. It is expected that the strike, if not settled, will have a bad influence on the local wool sale, which is fixed for Friday. In arguing their claims the'men say-that their full demands add only Id. per ton to coal, M. per ton to genera lcargo. Id. per bale to wool, and Is. per thousand feet to timber.
